CNA Classes in Kansas (KS)

To become a CNA in Kansas, you must take the state approved program and pass the test. You can work as a CNA only after your name appears on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry.

The Kansas Department for Aging and Diability Services manages the state’s CNA registry. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment oversees the process.

Programs can be taken in technical schools, community colleges, adult care homes, long-term care facilities, post-secondary schools, long term units of hospital, technical schools and nursing homes.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Must pass a background check with fingerprinting
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Pass a physical with a TB and drug test.
  • Show proof of immunizations

To Apply:

If you are:

  • Lapsed- CNAs with an expired or inactive license can take the test after taking a short refresher course; or
  • Reciprocity- Candidates who are already placed on another states’ nursing registry can skip the training and take the test;

you do not have to take the training.

Those who need to take the training can find a list of approved programs here.

Programs are 75 hours divided between classroom study (60 hours) and practical work (15 hours). After training, you need to apply to take the test. The test has two parts, a written and practical.

Fees:

The fees for the program vary per college, but the cost is usually about $1000. Testing fees are separate and are $20 for the written and skills test.

If you are employed, the fees will be paid by the employer.

Renewal:

A CNA certificate expires every 2 years. To renew, you must take CNA continuing education of at least 30 hours.

Facts:

  • Paid fees are non-refundable.
  • You get three attempts to pass the test during the training program. If you do not pass in 1 year, then the training must be taken again.
  • You must pay the testing fee for every attempt.
