CNA Classes in Utah (UT)

To become a CNA in Utah you need to take training classes. After passing the exam, you will be placed on the state Nurse Aide Registry. Then you will be able to work as a CNA.

Requirements

  • 18 years old
  • Read at a 9th grade level
  • Pass a full health exam with a TB and a drug test
  • Proof of immunization
  • Pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting

Costs

The cost of the training program is about $800. If you are employed by a healthcare facility, your expenses will be paid by your employer.

Testing and retesting fees are $35 each for the written or the skills sections.

How to Apply

You may be able to take the exam without the training if you:

  • Can provide proof of a valid out-of-state CNA certification in good standing.
  • Are a licensed nurse with an expired license in good standing. Provide proof of your previous license issued by another state. You are only allowed one attempt to pass the exam. If you are unable to pass, you must take the training classes.
  • Are a student who has completed the first semester of nursing school within the last two years. You are allowed three attempts to pass the exam. If you are unable to pass, you must take the training classes.
  • Have an expired Utah CNA certification in good standing. If it is not expired for more than one year, you can retake the test without the training classes.

All others must take a training program. The classes require a minimum of 80 hours to finish. They include 16 hours of practical work and 64 hours of classroom learning. After completing it, you must pass the exam within 12 months. If you do not pass, you will have to retrain.

Renewal

Your CNA certification must be renewed every 24 months. Prove that you have been a paid employee for at least 200 hours during the past 24 months, under the guidance of a licensed nurse. A renewal notice will be mailed 45 days before it expires.
